Why Short Stories Are Useful for Your Learning Ollie Richards Reading by the Canals in Venice Many people are surprised to hear me suggest that they learn through stories. However, in my many years of teaching I have found that stories are the most effective and interesting way to learn a new language. In fact, in all eight languages I've studied, stories have been a vital part of the journey. Why because they solidify learning into your long-term memory in a way that Phone Number List classroom exercises and textbooks cannot. When you read a story at an appropriate level you will naturally absorb vocabulary and grammar. That's it in context. You won't encounter unfamiliar words and grammar in isolation but will understand them as part of an entire sentence or paragraph. Even if you don't quite know what they mean the context allows you to make a good guess and move on. The meaning gives you clues. They become easy to understand when you read a series of related events. Novels are great for language learning because they make your reading experience so much fun. Emotions come into play. The story will engage you on both an emotional and academic level. This not only makes the language easier to remember but also engages your memory cells. So you're more likely to recognize these new words when you encounter them again. Successfully reading a short story can bring a huge sense of accomplishment and really boost your confidence.
